SSHRC Doctoral Scholarships

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowships and Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) Doctoral Scholarships aim to develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of scholarly achievement in undergraduate and graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities. 

  • Description

    There are two types of SSHRC Doctoral awards available through a single application:

    • Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral (CGS-D) - for study in Canada.
    • SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships - for study in Canada or abroad.
  • Value and Duration
    • Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS-D: $35,000 a year for 3 years (for study in Canada).
    • SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships: $20,000 a year for 1 to 4 years (for study in Canada or abroad).
  • Deadline
    Thursday, November 15, 2018 by 4 p.m.
  • Eligibility

    To be considered eligible for support, as of the application deadline date, you must:

    • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
    • Be applying for support to pursue the first PhD (or equivalent).
    • Not have already received a scholarship or fellowship from SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR to undertake or complete a doctoral degree or combined MA/PhD.
    • Not be applying in the same academic year to NSERC or CIHR.
    • Be registered as a full-time student, undertaking or continuing a doctoral program in the social sciences and humanities.
    • Not have exceeded the allowable number of months already spent in the doctoral study, as set out in Value and Duration.
    • If you are NOT registered at UOIT in the Fall 2018 term, but intend to undertake doctoral studies, you must submit your SSHRC Doctoral Award application directly to SSHRC by November 6, 2018.
