Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Doctoral Research Awards

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Doctoral Research Awards provide special recognition and funding to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree, allowing them an opportunity to gain research experience. 

  • Description

    There are two programs administered through a single application:

    •   The Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS-D) for study in Canada
    •   The Doctoral Foreign Study Award (DFSA) for study abroad

    For complete eligibility and evaluation criteria, interested applicants must review the official CIHR criteria.

  • Value and Duration
    Both the CGS-D and the DFSA are of equivalent value (maximum $35,000 per year for three years).
  • Deadline
    • Wednesday, September 26, 2018 - deadline to obtain signature of institution
    • Tuesday, October 2, 2018 - apply directly to funding agency
  • Application Procedure

    Candidates interested in applying for the CIHR Doctoral Award must submit their application through ResearchNet.
