Payment of awards and assistantships

The method of payment for awards and assistantships varies by the type of funding. A description of how the different types of awards and assistantships are typically paid to students are outlined below.

Teaching assistantships, research assistantships and graduate research assistantships

Assistantships are coordinated through the faculty offices and are typically paid to students on a bi-weekly or monthly basis as outlined in the contract.

Graduate Studies entrance scholarships

Graduate Studies entrance scholarships are applied to the student tuition account in equal payments at the beginning of each term. Payments are made before the tuition payment deadline and until the award has expired or until the student no longer meets the eligibility requirements outlined in the offer of scholarship.

Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS) and Ontario Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (OGSST)

OGS and OGSST scholarships are also applied to the student tuition account in equal payments at the beginning of each term. Payments are made before the tuition payment deadline and until the award has expired or until the student no longer meets the eligibility requirements outlined by the OGS program(s).

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) awards

CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC awards are paid to students on a bi-weekly basis for the duration of the academic year, typically September 1 to August 31. These external organizations require any student who completes their degree early to repay a portion of the scholarship.

Bursaries

Most bursaries are coordinated through the Student Awards and Financial Aid office (SAFA). Bursary recipients will normally receive a cheque or direct deposit to their personal bank account.
