SSHRC Doctoral Scholarships


The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowships and Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) Doctoral Scholarships aim to develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of scholarly achievement in undergraduate and graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities. There are two types of SSHRC Doctoral awards available through a single application:

  • Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral (CGS-D) - for study in Canada
  • SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship - for study in Canada or abroad


  •   Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarships: $35,000 a year for three years (for study in Canada)
  •   SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships: $20,000 a year for one to four years (for study in Canada or abroad)


To be considered eligible for support, as of the application deadline date, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
  • Be applying for support to pursue the first PhD (or equivalent).
  • Be pursuing doctoral studies in the social sciences or humanities.
  • Not have already received a scholarship or fellowship from SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR to undertake or complete a doctoral degree or combined MA/PhD.
  • Not be applying in the same academic year to NSERC or CIHR.
  • Obtained a grade of A- (3.7 on a 4.3 scale) average or greater in each of the last two completed years of study.
  • To be eligible to apply through UOIT, an applicant must be a full-time registered student.
  • If you are not registered at UOIT in the Fall 2017 term but intend to undertake doctoral studies, you must submit your SSHRC Doctoral Award application directly to SSHRC by Friday, November 7, 2017.

Next steps:

Candidates must receive the endorsement of SGPS through faculty selection and university-wide selection process in order to be nominated.

Department appraisal will be completed for successful nominees.

The results of the competition will be released in Spring 2018.
